Imagine having up to $10,000 a month to put your mission in front of people searching for exactly what you offer: volunteers looking for opportunities, families looking for services, donors looking for causes. That’s what the Google Ad Grants program provides to eligible nonprofits.
Many organizations either don’t know about it or sign up and struggle to use it well. Here’s how it works.
What is Google Ad Grants?
Google Ad Grants is part of Google for Nonprofits. It gives eligible nonprofits up to $10,000 per month in in-kind search advertising on Google. Your ads appear in Google search results, just like paid ads from businesses.
The grant renews monthly as long as your account stays compliant. Unused credit doesn’t roll over, so the goal is to use as much of it as possible, effectively.
Who qualifies?
Eligibility requirements are set by Google and can change, so always confirm the current rules on Google for Nonprofits. In the U.S., organizations generally need to:
- Hold valid charitable status as a 501(c)(3) organization
- Register with Google for Nonprofits and agree to its terms
- Have a functional website with substantial content about your mission and programs, served over HTTPS
Government entities, hospitals and healthcare organizations, schools and universities are generally not eligible for the main program, though some educational institutions may qualify through separate programs.
The rules that keep your account active
Ad Grants accounts have to follow program policies that paid accounts don’t. These include requirements such as:
- Maintaining a minimum click-through rate across the account (Google currently sets this at 5% each month)
- Avoiding single-word keywords and overly generic keywords, with limited exceptions
- Keeping keyword quality scores above Google’s minimum
- Setting up meaningful conversion tracking, such as donations, sign-ups or contact form submissions
- Responding to Google’s annual program survey
- Promoting your mission, not commercial activity
Accounts that fall out of compliance can be paused, which is why ongoing management matters.
How to make Ad Grants work
Build campaigns around your programs
Create separate campaigns for each goal, such as volunteering, services, events and education. Each campaign should send people to a relevant page, not just your homepage.
Target what people actually search
Think about how people describe their needs: “free tax help near me,” “food pantry volunteer opportunities,” “how to talk to teens about mental health.” Specific, multi-word keywords perform better and keep your click-through rate healthy.
Create helpful landing pages
The page someone lands on should answer their question and offer a clear next step. Strong landing pages improve quality scores, which helps your ads show more often.
Track real outcomes
Set up conversion tracking for donations, volunteer applications, newsletter sign-ups and event registrations. This shows what’s working and enables automated bidding strategies.
Review and optimize monthly
Pause poor performers, add negative keywords, test new ad copy and expand into new programs.
Common mistakes
- Sending all ads to the homepage
- Using broad, one-word keywords
- Never adding conversion tracking
- Setting up the account once and never touching it again
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Ad Grants really free?
Yes. The advertising credit is provided by Google at no cost. Some nonprofits pay an agency to manage the account, but the ad spend itself is covered by the grant.
How long does approval take?
It varies. Registering with Google for Nonprofits and completing the Ad Grants application can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
Can we run paid Google Ads too?
Yes. Some nonprofits run a separate paid account alongside Ad Grants for campaigns that fall outside grant rules, such as display or YouTube ads.
