Business Cards Still Matter: Design Tips That Make People Keep Yours

In a world of QR codes and LinkedIn connections, it’s easy to assume business cards are outdated. But hand someone a well-made card at a networking event, chamber mixer or client meeting and you’ll see why they’ve stuck around. A card is tangible, personal and memorable in a way a digital contact isn’t.

The catch is that a flimsy, cluttered or off-brand card can undo a good first impression. Here’s how to design one people keep.

Start with your brand

Your card should look like it belongs with your website, signage and social media. Use your official logo, brand colors and fonts. If they aren’t documented yet, a brand guide is worth creating first, because it will keep every printed piece consistent.

Keep the information focused

Most cards try to say too much. Include only what helps someone contact you or remember you:

  • Your name and title
  • Company name and logo
  • Phone number and email
  • Website
  • One optional extra, such as a short tagline, address or single social handle

Leave out anything you wouldn’t want someone to call about, like a fax number you never check.

Design tips that make a difference

Give it room to breathe

White space makes a card feel premium and easy to read. Don’t fill every corner.

Use readable type sizes

Contact details should be easy to read at arm’s length. Avoid tiny, light or overly decorative fonts for essential information.

Create clear hierarchy

Your name or company should stand out first, then the details. Use size and weight differences rather than lots of colors.

Use both sides

Put contact information on one side and a bold brand moment on the other: your logo, a pattern, a tagline or a call to action.

Add a QR code with a purpose

A QR code can link to your website, booking page, digital contact card or Google reviews. Make sure the destination is mobile-friendly, and test the code before printing.

Paper and finishes

The way a card feels is part of the impression.

  • Matte: clean, modern and easy to write on
  • Soft-touch: a velvety coating that feels premium immediately
  • Thick or uncoated stocks: natural, upscale and substantial
  • Foil: metallic accents that catch the light
  • Spot UV: glossy highlights on a logo or pattern

Choose finishes that fit your brand personality. A law firm and a brewery probably shouldn’t have the same card.

Get the technical details right

  • Ask for a print-ready PDF with bleed so colors extend cleanly to the edge
  • Keep important text inside the safe area, away from edges
  • Use CMYK color for print, and expect slight differences from screen colors
  • Always review a proof before production

Cards for your whole team

For teams, create one master template so every card is consistent and reorders for new hires are quick and easy.

Frequently asked questions

How many business cards should I order?

It depends on how often you network. Many professionals start with a modest quantity, then reorder once they know what works.

Should I include my photo?

It can help in relationship-driven fields like real estate or consulting, where people want to remember a face. For most businesses it’s optional.

Can you design my cards to match my website?

Yes. Our team designs print and digital together so everything matches.
